Cincinnati High School Boxing Program Highlights The Cincinnati High School Boxing Program was established in 1996 at the request of students. Moeller is one of three high schools in the country with a boxing program. In addition , students from other high schools in Cincinnati train and compete with the Cincinnati High School Boxing Team. The objective of the program is to provide a safe and organized forum to learn Olympic-Style boxing. Moeller has had boxers who have competed in amateur bouts and at the Golden Gloves tournament. Amateur boxing is a misunderstood sport because is is compared to professional boxing. In reality, amateur boxing is very safe due to the specific rules, protective equipment, and emphasis on athlete safety. Team Info Boxers practice and compete at their skill level based on their age, weight, and experience. There are no tryouts; all athletes are allowed to participate. Students will learn the sport of Olympic-style amateur boxing. Training includes shadow boxing and working out on pads and on the heavy bag. Safety equipment used during practice includes hand shadow boxing and working out on pads and on the heavy bag. Safety equipment used during practice includes handwraps, mouthpiece, extra-padded gloves, safety belt, and head gear. Boxers only need to purchase a mouthpieces and hand raps. See Front Desk for exact times and cost Practices 3:30-5:30 Competition Schedule Competition includes a Cincinnati high school show and bouts with other high schools, such as Leo high school in Chicago, IL and Aquinas high school in Rochester, New York. The experienced boxers are able to compete in community boxing around the state. In addition, boxers have been involved in boxing competition at the community/club level and with the Golden Gloves Tournament. Skills Required No experience is necessary. Beginning boxers are trained starting with stance and motion, proper defensive technique, and instruction on how to land a full range of scoring punches. Want to learn more?
